Cricket, Rugby, and Football Stadiums: What Makes Each Ground Different

A football stadium and a cricket ground solve the same basic problem — fit as many spectators as close to the action as possible — but the shape of the playing surface and the geometry of the game push them toward very different architectural solutions. Understanding those differences explains why some venues successfully host multiple sports and others cannot.

The cricket ground: oval and outfield

Cricket is played on an oval or broadly circular ground with no fixed pitch dimensions. The Laws of Cricket specify only the playing surface used by batters and bowlers — the 22-yard strip — while the outfield boundary can be anywhere from 55 to 90 yards from the centre. This flexibility means cricket grounds tend toward a roughly circular shape with stands wrapping around most or all of the perimeter.

Lord's Cricket Ground in St John's Wood, London, is the sport's most famous venue. Owned and operated by the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), it has a seating capacity of approximately 30,000 with plans to expand, and the famous Lord's slope — a genuine gradient of nearly two and a half metres across the width of the ground — influences how both the match and the ground's architecture work. The new Warner Stand and the Mound Stand have evolved the ground significantly over recent decades, but Lord's retains a patchwork quality that reflects its Victorian-era origins. The Long Room inside the Pavilion, which members walk through to reach their seats, is one of cricket's most distinctive spaces.

Eden Gardens in Kolkata is cricket at a different scale entirely. Officially capacitated at approximately 66,000 after renovation, it was formerly larger, and on major India Test or ODI matchdays it generates a noise level that rivals any football ground in the world. The oval bowl, the tiered concrete stands, and the atmosphere during an India versus Pakistan fixture represent cricket venue design at its most intense.

The Melbourne Cricket Ground sits at 100,024 capacity and is the world's largest cricket venue by seating. It is also, simultaneously, one of Australian Rules Football's primary grounds — the AFL Grand Final is played there annually. The MCG achieves this multi-use function because both cricket and Australian Rules Football suit an oval ground. An AFL oval is typically around 165 metres by 135 metres, larger than a cricket outfield, but the two shapes are compatible enough that the ground can convert between them seasonally. Rugby union grounds: rectangular but wide

Rugby union is played on a rectangular pitch up to 100 metres long and up to 70 metres wide, with in-goal areas adding further length at each end. The East Stand upper tier rises steeply and provides sightlines that the RFU has used as a selling point for decades. The Stade de France at Saint-Denis operates as a dual-purpose national stadium hosting both the France national football team and the France national rugby union team — as well as athletics during its original 1998 construction brief. Capacity of 81,338 is shared across codes. The athletics track has been removed for most events to bring spectators closer to the pitch, and both codes work reasonably well within the bowl, though the sight-lines are inevitably a compromise between the different playing field dimensions.

Eden Park in Auckland, New Zealand, is the country's primary rugby venue and has hosted Rugby World Cup finals. It holds approximately 50,000 and is also used for cricket, creating a situation where an oval ground hosts a rectangular game. For rugby, temporary stands fill the corners. The result is workable rather than ideal, but the historical and cultural weight of Eden Park as the All Blacks' home venue makes the compromise acceptable to New Zealand rugby supporters.

NFL gridiron and the retrofit challenge

An American football field is 120 yards long (including end zones) and 53.3 yards wide. This is significantly shorter and narrower than a football pitch, which means the NFL retrofit challenge is essentially the opposite of rugby's: fitting a smaller playing surface into a bowl designed for a larger one, or alternatively building a convertible pitch system.

Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in north London, which opened in 2019 at a construction cost of approximately one billion pounds, was purpose-built with an artificial grass NFL field that slides beneath the natural grass football pitch on a retractable-tray system. The NFL surface appears from below while the Premier League surface rolls aside, allowing the same bowl to host both codes without any reconfiguration of seating. This is currently the most technically sophisticated multi-sport solution in operation. The stadium hosts annual NFL London games under a long-term partnership agreement.

Wembley Stadium and the Allianz Arena in Munich have hosted NFL games by temporarily overlaying artificial turf across the natural pitch surface. The sightlines work — the bowl is large enough that even NFL's narrower field does not leave the corners of the ground feeling disconnected — but neither ground is purpose-built for the conversion.

Why the sport determines the architecture

The shape and size of the playing surface is the primary determinant of stadium form. Football stadiums, with their rectangular pitches of roughly 100 by 65 metres, optimise a tight rectangular bowl with four stands closing at the corners — the modern enclosed design pioneered at grounds like Juventus' Allianz Stadium in Turin and the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Cricket grounds expand outward in a circular direction. Rugby grounds are close to football in geometry but slightly wider, making many European national stadiums genuinely dual-purpose for football and rugby.

The MCG and Eden Gardens show that a well-built oval ground can serve cricket and Australian Rules Football simultaneously, while Twickenham and Stade de France show that rectangular rugby and rectangular football are close enough in geometry to coexist. The NFL retrofit challenges at Wembley and Tottenham are the sport at its most demanding — and the retractable pitch at Spurs is the most complete answer yet found.

Sightlines and the standing-versus-seated debate

One practical implication of multi-sport venue use is the sightline compromise. A cricket ground designed for spectators to watch fielders at the boundary will have shallower stand rakes than a football ground whose primary concern is watching movement across a compressed midfield. The Stade de France's relatively modest rake — designed for athletics with a running track — means that front-row spectators at football and rugby are further from the pitch than at a purpose-built football ground of similar capacity. The MCG's deep, steep stands work well for cricket because the distance to the boundary is large enough to reward height; for AFL the same stands also work because the oval field fills the visual field from most positions.
