Retractable-Roof Stadiums and How They Work

A retractable roof solves one of the oldest problems in stadium design: how to protect spectators and events from the weather while keeping natural grass alive and preserving the feel of open-air sport. Since the first major openable roofs of the late twentieth century, engineers have devised an extraordinary range of mechanisms — sliding panels, rotating petals, fabric that folds like an umbrella — each shaped by the local climate and the sports played beneath. Why build a roof that moves

Fixed-roof domes such as the original Houston Astrodome solved the weather problem but created new ones: natural grass cannot survive without sunlight, and a permanently enclosed bowl can feel sterile. A retractable roof is the compromise. It can be closed for rain, snow, extreme heat or climate-controlled events such as concerts, then opened to let sunlight reach the pitch and restore the atmosphere of an open ground. The trade-off is enormous mechanical complexity and cost, which is why these roofs remain rare among the world's tens of thousands of stadiums.

The sliding-panel approach

The most common mechanism is the sliding panel: large rigid roof sections mounted on rails that part and slide back over the fixed sections of the roof. Wembley Stadium in London uses sliding roof sections that cover the seats but leave a central opening over the pitch; the partial roof is designed to shelter spectators rather than fully enclose the bowl. The Principality Stadium in Cardiff, opened in 1999, was Britain's first fully retractable-roof stadium and can be sealed completely for rugby and football in Welsh weather.

The pinwheel and the petals

The most visually dramatic mechanism belongs to the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, opened in 2017. Its roof is formed of eight triangular ETFE panels arranged like a camera aperture or a pinwheel; they slide simultaneously toward the centre to close, or retract outward to open, in a motion unlike any other stadium. The Singapore National Stadium uses a vast domed roof that is among the largest free-spanning structures in the world, with a movable section. These designs treat the roof as architectural spectacle as much as weather protection.

Fabric and folding roofs

Lighter, cheaper retractable roofs use tensioned fabric rather than rigid panels. The Veltins-Arena in Gelsenkirchen, home of Schalke, has a retractable fabric roof and — uniquely — a slide-out pitch tray, so the entire grass surface can be moved outside to receive sunlight while the interior hosts other events. BC Place in Vancouver was fitted in 2011 with a cable-supported retractable fabric roof, one of the largest of its kind, replacing an earlier air-supported dome. Fabric roofs reduce weight and cost but offer less insulation than rigid panels.

The pitch problem and rolling fields

Even with an openable roof, keeping natural grass healthy under any cover is difficult. Some venues solve this radically by moving the pitch rather than the roof. The Sapporo Dome in Japan grows its football pitch outdoors and rolls it inside on an air-cushion system, the "Hovering Stage", taking around two and a half hours. The Veltins-Arena and the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium use retractable or removable pitch systems so that grass and synthetic surfaces can coexist. These solutions reflect how central the grass-versus-weather conflict is to roofed-stadium design.

Climate, heat and the modern World Cup

Retractable and fixed roofs have become central to hosting major tournaments in difficult climates. Several 2022 World Cup stadiums in Qatar combined roofs with advanced air-cooling systems to make open-air matches comfortable in the desert. Several 2026 World Cup venues in the United States — Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, AT&T Stadium in Dallas, NRG Stadium in Houston — have retractable or fixed roofs to manage the North American summer. The roof is increasingly an answer to climate as much as to rain.

The cost and the debate

Retractable roofs add hundreds of millions to construction budgets and require constant maintenance of rails, motors and seals. Critics argue the money could fund other facilities, and some roofs are opened so rarely that their movable nature is barely used. Supporters counter that a roof guarantees events regardless of weather, protects expensive playing surfaces and broadens a venue's commercial calendar to year-round concerts and conventions. The economics depend heavily on local climate and how busy the building is.
